The first prong of our approach is to build a solid foundation for the path to the workplace through a series of Community Connection Meetings held by Enable America in geographically and demographically diverse cities. The goal of these meetings is to create a local task force to address and eliminate the barriers to employment faced by disabled job seekers. In addition to addressing the primary concerns of the disabled community, the Community Connection Meetings showcase new technology that assists disabled individuals in the workplace and at home. Innovative technology is featured such as talking e-mail and walking GPS systems for the blind, a wheelchair that can climb stairs and electronic voices for people who cannot speak.
These meetings are the first step in building a network among communities to share the latest information and trends affecting people with disabilities, their families and support groups. Most importantly, the information identified locally will be shared among task forces nationally.
